Reckless motorist nearly struck family

Police are hunting a dangerous driver who nearly mowed down a family-offour in Perth.

Officers said a couple and their two children, aged four months and four years, were crossing Glasgow Road when they were almost hit by a red Ford Fiesta which sped through a red light.

A spokesman said the incident happened on Tuesday at around 5.30pm, near Lidl.

He said: “A red 63-plate Ford Fiesta went through the red light at the pedestrian crossing at speed, and almost struck a couple crossing the road with their two children,” he said.

“The car missed them by less than two metres, before driving off and parking in the Lidl car park.

“We have the details of the car involved and are following a positive line of inquiry, however we would still like to trace anyone who saw the incident.

“In particular, we would like to trace the driver of another car who witnessed the incident and stopped to offer assistance to the family.”

Police have been carrying out door-todoor inquiries, and are checking CCTV from around the area.

Officers have appealed for any passing motorists who may have dashcam footage of the incident.

Local residents said they were shocked by the incident, but said motorists passing through red lights was a recurring problem at this section.

“This poor family must have been terrified,” one mum said.

“I have seen incidents like this happen before. You see a lot of cars just powering past the traffic lights.”

Councillor Peter Barrett said: “A potential tragedy for this young family may have only been avoided by the narrowest of margins,” he said.

“The right thing for the driver of the vehicle is to contact the police now and explain why they left the scene, as the owner of the vehicle will be readily traced by the police.

“I want to thank the witness who did stop to provide assistance to the family for the concern they demonstrated.”
