Footballer told police his driving wasn’t dangerous as no one died

Former Rangers and Dundee United star Bilel Mohsni told police who stopped him on a Fife road that his driving wasn’t dangerous because no one had died.

Mohsni, 32, was pulled over in his powerful Mercedes after officers saw him overtake several vehicles on the approach to a bend.

The defender was on the A914 heading towards St Andrews on a Sunday morning when his dangerous driving was witnessed by police in an unmarked car.

At the time he was on a short-term contract with Dundee United and living in Monifieth.

Mohsni was pulled over in St Andrews. When officers cautioned him he told them: “I didn’t kill anyone so it’s not dangerous.”

The Tunisian, who lives in Paris, travelled back to Scotland to appear at Kirkcaldy Sheriff Court, where he admitted driving dangerously between the Forgan roundabout and St Michaels on April 8, last year.

He was banned from driving for 18 months, ordered to the resit the advanced test and fined £720 by Sheriff James Williamson.

Depute procurator fiscal Dev Kapadia said Mohsni passed three vehicles – including the unmarked police car – in one manoeuvre on the approach to a bend. He then overtook another vehicle at a blind spot and the officers asked local police to look out for his car.

Mohsni was stopped 10 minutes later at 10.25am at Petheram Bridge in St Andrews.

Mr Kapadia said: “This was someone driving a fairly powerful car who appears to be detached from the reality of normal road traffic rules and regulations.”

The court heard Mohsni’s latest contract with a Greek side ended in July and that he was presently focused on his family, living on his career earnings.

Solicitor Michael Lyon said: “I understand from Mr Mohsni that he moved back in with his parents at the beginning of this year.

“His father suffers from Alzheimer’s and he is devoting his life to caring for his family.”

He confirmed the professional footballer was without a club and added: “In terms of his future plans that depends on what happens with his father.”

Mohsni, who was said to have no previous convictions, is remembered for an on-pitch brawl with Lee Erwin during his final game for Rangers in a promotion play-off final in 2015.

He has also played for Angers in France, Paris FC, Tunisian side Etoile du Sahel and latterly Panachaiki.
