Setback for Wanderers

-

Dundee Wanderers’ title hopes got a second successive knockback with Premiership neighbours Grove Menzieshill also falling foul to the second of Glasgow’s big hitters.

Meanwhile, Clydesdale Western were making the most of their chance to go three points clear with an 11-goal masterclass against close neighbours Glasgow University.

In two weeks not only have Wanderers’ goals dried up but their usually tight defence, which conceded just once in five games, has shipped another dozen. They offered little against Wildcats’ pace and precision on the counter.

First half strikes by Ava Smith, Megan Cox and Kate Holmes set up the victory before Emma McDiarmid, Alex Stewart and a second by Cox turned the screw in the second.

Champions Edinburgh University leapt into second with a better goal difference than Watsonians and Wanderers.

Amy Brodie and Becky Mill gave the students a 2-0 interval advantage over Grove with Brodie getting a hat-trick while ex-Grovie Jenny Walls made it a nap hand prior to Ellie Stott’s late consolation.

St Andrews University hover over the relegation zone after their 2-0 defeat to Fjordhus Reivers in Division 2.

Stirling University boosted their Championship 1 promotion claims with a 4-0 win over Grove Menzieshill II while the local Champ 2 clash between Perthshire and Dundee University was goalless.

Kinross and St Andrews II suffered identical 6-2 reverses away to CALA II and Ayr respectively. Vicky Carver and Robyn Graham hit the mark for Kinross.

In Midland Division 1 Wanderers II gave St Andrews III a lesson in finishing. Amy Snelle (4), and Kirsty Jefferies (3) topped the honours board in an 11-1 result. Madras ran up a 5-0 scoreline over Perthshire II with Jade Milne, Ali Bell and Abbey Wallace adding to Emma Malcolm’s brace. St Andrews IV edged Brechin Thistles 3-2 and Kinross II took the points with a 2-0 win over Grove III.

Stirling University II took six points in Division 2 with wins over Blairgowrie and St Andrews V.

In Sunday’s Scottish U18 Cup finals at Peffermill, Watsonians beat Inverleith 2-1. Grove Menzieshill beat Wildcats 3-1 in the morning then lost 3-0 to Grange in the 5th/6th play-off.
