Former Saints defender hopes Pars can continue form by swatting Wasps

- By Iain Collin

Ever-present Aaron Comrie has already played more games for Dunfermline in four months than he managed in four years with St Johnstone – and he is desperate for the matches to keep coming.

The 22-year-old joined the Pars in the summer after being told he would not be offered a new deal at Saints.

The former Celtic youth player made 16 appearances during his time at McDiarmid Park, including 13 Premiership starts, but never managed to convince Tommy Wright he could be a regular first choice.

But the full-back has played in all 18 outings for the Pars so far this season and heads to Alloa this afternoon buoyed by the most consistent spell of his career.

Comrie, who also had successful loan spells with Montrose and Peterhead while with Saints, said: “I came here to play games. I knew that it was a big club so I am thoroughly enjoying it so far.

“I have played every game, the manager has been brilliant with me and it is good that form has picked up.

“It is the first time that I have played in the Championship and it makes it easier when you are winning games and trying to push up the table.

“This is the longest spell I’ve had playing for anyone.

“I had two loan spells but both of them were January time so I have never completed a full season playing. That has got to be my aim.

“You don’t know if you are playing every week but it is a nice challenge knowing that you have the chance and if you do well you can keep the jersey.

“In the last couple of years I have sat in stands, sat on the bench – it is mentally tough so I don’t want that to happen again. That is why I am trying so hard to keep my jersey.

“I never played much at St Johnstone last season and the season before was when I made most of my appearances. It is good that I am playing for Dunfermline and long may that continue.”

Dunfermline moved to within four points of fourth place with a third successive home win last weekend.

The 2-0 victory over Queen of the South means the Pars have only lost once in their last seven outings.

But Comrie knows the Fifers will have their hands full this afternoon after already suffering defeat to Alloa in the Challenge Cup and being held to a 1-1 draw in the league.

He added: “We have already played them twice and not beat them yet.

“But we are on a good run of form so we will be looking to go there expecting a tough game but going to try and win it.

“Our form in the last six or seven has been good and we want to pick up maximum points on Saturday but we know it’s not going to be easy.

“After our last two wins we can finally start looking up the table and try to catch the teams in front of us.

“We are only a point off Arbroath (in fifth) so to catch them has to be our aim. We have to push for a play-off spot, get there as soon as early possible and try and maintain that.”
