‘Serious’ collision in Fife causes gridlock on A92
Car left wedged underneath lorry trailer in ‘brutal’ scene
A “serious” collision between a lorry and a car caused chaos on a busy section of the A92 in Fife.
The incident happened at Bankhead roundabout near Kirkcaldy just before 5.25pm yesterday.
Emergency services partially closed the A92 between Bankhead roundabout and Redhouse while the aftermath of the crash was being dealt with.
Motorists reported long tail-backs of vehicles “crawling” on the double carriageway for at least an hour and the area being in “gridlock”.
There were no updates on potential casualties last night.
Police and the ambulance service were in attendance.
One eyewitness said: “There was a lorry in lane one, car wedged underneath it, front end under the trailer and back end blocking lane two.”
The incident was widely discussed on social media.
Baz Lowe posted: “I passed it, must have just happened at 5ish and the passenger side of the car was almost non existent.
“The lorry driver was just getting out his cab when I passed.”
Karen Capewell added: “It looks a bad one involving a huge lorry – I was caught in the tailback heading to Glenrothes – hope everyone involved is OK.”
Other eyewitnesses described the incident as “pretty brutal”.
At the time of the crash Traffic Scotland posted: “A92 is closed in both directions between Bankhead Roundabout – Preston Roundabout due to a serious RTC.
“Traffic is very slow on the surrounding routes.”
An eyewitness said: “It looks absolutely horrendous and I hope and pray it looks worse than it is.
“Can’t be sure what’s caused it but the front of the car looks like it has been destroyed under the trailer.
“It probably couldn’t have happened at a worse time with so many people going home from their work, and the normal diversions are complete gridlock, but that kind of pales into insignificance.”
