Autism charity receives £45,000 windfall to aid community work

-

A Perth-based charity, which supports young people who have been diagnosed with autism and their families, has been awarded more than £45,000.

Perth Autism Support (PAS) is one of nine groups across Scotland to receive a share of a £400,000 pot of money, which has been made available to help people live more active and independent lives, and to raise awareness of the condition.

Perth Autism Support offers a range of services including information and training sessions, social activities, holiday programmes and siblings groups.

The charity’s chief executive Angie Ferguson said the new funding, provided in a partnership between Inspire Scotland and the Scottish Government, was a big deal for the group.

“It is a really great way to raise awareness of what we do,” she said.

“It is significant because it is allowing us that wider community engagement.

“Doing something as simple as shopping can be a challenge for anyone with autism and helping retailers understand what it’s like for them is important.”

The funding allocations to national and local groups were decided after a series of autistic advisory forums were held all over Scotland. During the sessions, people with autism spoke about the projects which they expected to have the greatest impact.

Minister for Mental Health, Claire Haughey said: “We want Scotland to be an inclusive place in which autistic people can play a full role.”
