Scottish rugby legend Doddie Weir is among the personalities coming to Perthshire next month for the Pitlochry Winter Words Festival.

He was unable to attend last year but will travel to this year’s event to share his favourite lessons on life through his book, The World According To Doddie.

The festival brings together authors, adventurers, broadcasters and TV personalities to celebrate Scotland’s literary scene.

Attendees will experience a range of features including book fairs, signings and lunches.

Event curator Anna Day said: “This is my twelfth year programming Winter Words and each time it becomes a little easier because I’ve got to know the audience over the years.

“All year round I look out for authors and books who will suit the Winter Words programme – wildlife, history, the best fiction, the funniest authors.

“We want to attract new faces to Winter Words each year, so hope that our workshops, children’s events and music will bring more people to hear the wonderful authors we have coming.”

The festival will host a range of Scottish personalities.

News presenter Sally Magnusson will speak ahead of the launch of her second novel, The Ninth Child, while Newsnight presenter Kirsty Wark will take a break from politics to talk about her latest book which is set in Scotland.

Best-selling crime writer Val McDermid, from Fife, will discuss bringing her characters to life and Kenneth Steven will host a workshop on writing poetry.

Ms Day said: “Festivals are like families – you should never have a favourite author just as you should never have a favourite child, but I’m especially looking forward to Sally Magnusson.”

The Winter Words Festival will run from February 13-16 and tickets can be bought online.
