Wotherspoon not living in cup past with Saints

St Johnstone midfielder David Wotherspoon isn’t content to bask in Scottish Cup glory of old.

The journey to create new memories for the 2014 winner begins against Morton at McDiarmid Park tomorrow afternoon, with old team-mate Chris Millar trying to stop it at the first junction.

“This is my seventh season and we’ve had a lot of success in that time,” said Wotherspoon.

“It’s been great. I’m sure the fans will be very happy with how the decade has gone.

“My first game was Rosenborg and I couldn’t have asked for a better start than that. But it felt like there were even better things to come, and that proved to be the case with winning the cup.

“It was great to be part of a special season for this club

“There aren’t many of us left here from the cup final team.”

Wotherspoon added: “I’m sure over the years when it comes to anniversaries we’ll keep getting together.

“But for myself, I’m still focusing on what we’re doing right now and our next game is in the cup against Midgey’s Morton.

“I’m sure he’ll be really looking forward to coming back here.

“He was a big character off the pitch and he always left everything on the pitch.

“He played with his heart on his sleeve and his presence in the dressing-room was crucial.”

Wotherspoon added: “He’s a great lad and it was sad when he left because he was such a big part of the dressing-room.

“It was a really strong group. There were a lot of older pros who kept things together. There was such a good team spirit and that was what carried us through that year, as well as having some very good players.

“It was our time. It was meant to be.”
