Debut goal helps Spurs sink City

-

Steven Bergwijn’s dream debut helped Jose Mourinho get one over his old rival Pep Guardiola as Tottenham beat Manchester City 2-0 in a drama-filled Premier League clash.

Bergwijn, a £25 million signing from PSV Eindhoven last week, made an immediate impact as he opened the scoring in fine style, with Son Heung-min clinching the most impressive three points of Mourinho’s reign in north London so far.

City, who were reduced to 10 men when Oleksandr Zinchenko saw red, missed a first-half penalty through Ilkay Gundogan while Sergio Aguero also hit a post as they failed to score for the first time in 24 away games.

Raheem Sterling was lucky to avoid a red card on a bad afternoon which saw City suffer a sixth defeat of the season, edging Liverpool – now 22 points ahead – even closer to the title.

For Spurs, this could do wonders for their top-four hopes as they are four points behind Chelsea and will hope to kick on from here.

Jay Rodriguez was inches away from grabbing a late winner for Burnley as Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal revolution threatened to take a worrying turn in yesterday’s 0-0 draw at Turf Moor.

Rodriguez struck the underside of the bar in the 77th minute before the ball bounced down on the line to deny the Clarets three deserved points.

Rodriguez, James Tarkowski and Jeff Hendrick had already spurned golden opportunities to put their side in front while the Gunners, still without a Premier League win since New Year’s Day, seldom threatened.

Liverpool had maintained their relentless march towards a first Premier League title with a 4-0 home win over Southampton on Saturday.

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Jordan Henderson and two goals from Mohamed Salah sealed the Reds’ 24th win from 25 games.

Big-money signing Bruno Fernandes was unable to inspire Manchester United to victory as his debut ended in a goalless draw at home to Wolves.

Two Antonio Rudiger headers earned fourth-placed Chelsea a 2-2 draw at Leicester, who remain clear in third.

Sheffield United moved up to fifth, five points behind Chelsea, as an own goal from Crystal Palace goalkeeper Vicente Guaita earned the Blades a 1-0 win at Selhurst Park.
