Glens go down to Orkney as islanders make it 10 unbeaten

-

Glenrothes became the latest victims of Orkney when the Tennent’s Caledonia Division One leaders chalked up a 28-5 win at Carleton Park.

The Fifers made a brave attempt to prevent the islanders from extending their unbeaten run to 10 matches.

After a scoreless first half, the visitors gradually gained the upper hand and clinched the bonus-point score with the final play of the game, with Ross Davidson claiming a try for Glenrothes.

Second-placed Dunfermline did all they could to remain in touch with Orkney with a 52-0 success at home to Hillfoots.

The five-point haul means the gap at the top remains at 13 points, with Dunfermline having a game in hand.

With Grangemouth Stags having their match at Aberdeen Wanderers postponed due to a waterlogged pitch, they lost ground on third-placed Ellon who were 76-0 winners over Blairgowrie.

Panmure welcomed Kinross to Forthill on Division Two (Midlands) duty. The pair served up a highly competitive contest with the visitors squeezing home 13-11.

The win moved Kinross above Kirkcaldy seconds in the table after the Beveridge Park men’s fixture against Rosyth Sharks was a victim of the weather.

For Pannie, the narrow defeat bonus point was some consolation, but the Broughty Ferry men remain third, level on points with Dundee University Medics who have two games in hand.

Division Three (Midlands) pacesetters Dunfermline seconds gave their points tally a significant boost when they chalked up a 92-5 home win over Perthshire seconds.

Their scoring feats mean they lead the way ahead of Bannockburn who are level on points but have played two more matches and have amassed fewer points.

They showed their mettle to edge out Crieff & Strathearn 31-26 at Braidhaugh and secure a four-try bonus.

Waid moved up a place and now sit within striking distance of Montrose, whom they beat 24-5 at Anstruther, while Morgan suffered a first defeat in three matches as they lost 24-12 away to Grangemouth Stags seconds.

The only game that went ahead in Division Four (Midlands) saw Stobswell take the honours in the top of the table clash against Howe Crusaders at Cupar, returning home with a 34-19 win to their credit.
