Perthshire school inspired by former pupil for fundraiser

-

A Perthshire school is taking inspiration from a sporting former pupil in its upcoming 24-hour long fundraiser.

Glenalmond College gave former Scotland rugby team captain Rob Wainwright a send off ahead of his 500-mile cycle for charity.

The school is now following his lead by undertaking its own 24-hour-long cycling fundraiser.

It aims to raise £1,000 in a 24-hour cycle, which is due to begin at noon today.

Around 100 pupils will cycle in hour-long relays on static training bikes located in the school’s quad area.

The youngsters are raising money for both the My Name’5 Doddie Foundation and 40tude charities.

Set up by former Scotland rugby internationalist Doddie Weir, the My Name’5 Doddie Foundation supports research for motor neurone disease (MND). The other cause, 40tude, pioneers research projects targeted at the early diagnosis and treatment of colon cancer.

Glenalmond College bursar David Lish will be among those taking part in the event.

He said: “We are delighted to be supporting the fantastic work of Doddie’s Foundation and 40tude and gearing up to start our 24 hour, all-weather, fund-raising cycle at noon on Wednesday.

“The importance of resilience and teamwork is something which Glenalmond nurtures in our pupils and this is a great example of an opportunity to do that as well as helping Rob raise funds for charity which is very dear to our hearts.”

The participants will include the pupils alongside staff from a wide range of the school’s departments.
