The announcement of the decontrol of fish, following upon the issuing by the Food Controller of a general license permitting all varieties of fish to be sold and bought without restriction as to price on and after May 17, is being received with much satisfaction in Montrose. An active advocate for immediate decontrol was early found in Mr Charles Ross, secretary of the Ferryden Fishermen’s Fund. Mr Ross, a member of the Fish Trade Council, has been notified to attend a further meeting in London on May 21.

A woman teller in a Dundee bank succeeded in scaring away a gunman who tried to hold up the bank. The attempted hold-up was at the Clydesdale head office, situated at 96 High Street. A man strolled up to the counter where Mrs Diane Cochrane, of Broughty Ferry, was a teller. He presented what appeared to be a cigarette light-type gun at her and pushed across a note demanding money, saying the “gun” contained acid. Mrs Cochrane swept notes out of his reach and alerted another teller. The man ran from the bank.

Tyre group Michelin is expected to announce that a major new investment programme at their plant in Dundee will cost substantially more than £12 million. It is understood that the figure will be revealed as the first phase of a substantial expansion programme at the Baldovie complex is formally inaugurated. The expansion is also expected to offer the prospect of some new jobs, In excess of £4 million is expected to be invested this year alone to increase production and warehouse capacity.

Rampaging Angus vandals have trashed bumblebee hives in part of the latest costly attack on a fruit farm. The insects were killed after polytunnels at the agricultural operation on the outskirts of Arbroath were targeted in a weekend spree which caused thousands of pounds worth of damage. The East Seaton business has been plagued by youngsters who pass through the farm on their way to drinking dens in the vicinity of the nearby Arbroath cliffs. Farm manager Allen Innes slammed those responsible.
