There was a major emergency operation in Perth yesterday after a van crashed, striking a gas main in the city.
Police confirm nobody was injured as result of afternoon incident
A van collided with the side of a house in Perth yesterday sparking fears of a major gas leak.
The busy A94 Strathmore Street in Bridgend was shut for around two hours after the works vehicle struck a gas main and building at around 1.20pm.
Witnesses described a “huge response” from emergency services as firefighters and engineers attended to the gas pipes, crumpled by the vehicle, and the police set up a diversion away from the affected area.
The owner of a nearby guesthouse told The Courier SGN employees had been working steadily on the site for hours to make it safe.
Rob Davidson, of Hazeldene Guest House, said: “I just heard a noise and the van was in the side of the wall. It had rolled down the hill.”
Despite the large-scale operation
Mr Davidson said occupants of nearby buildings, including a number of guest houses, were not forced to evacuate due to the concerns about the leak.
Another witness told The Courier: “It was a huge response. They’ve closed the main road.
“I’ve heard it’s a gas leak. A van has hit the side of the building and there are at least three or four fire engines and four police cars.”
A third added: “It almost looks like the van had a blow out. The driver’s front wheel is buckled.”
SGN engineers responded to the incident alongside the emergency services and worked with firefighters to make the scene safe.
A police spokesperson said: “An unattended van rolled a short distance into a gas main.
“No one has been injured thankfully. Inquiries are ongoing.”
An SFRS spokesperson said: “We got the call at 1.24pm. The call came from the police. One car has rolled into the side of a building.”
The road reopened shortly after 3pm with engineers still working at the site.
A spokesperson for SGN confirmed engineers had been at the location, making it safe.
