A woman is fighting for her life after the car she was travelling in crashed into a tree.

The 27-year-old is in a critical condition in Ninewells Hospital, Dundee, following the accident in South Street, Methil, on Sunday evening.

A three-year-old girl, who was with her in the car, sustained minor injuries and is in Victoria Hospital, Kirkcaldy, for observation.

Police said the 33-year-old male driver also suffered minor injury but did not require medical attention.

All three emergency services were called at 7.25pm after the silver Volkswagen Bora collided with the tree between the roundabout junction with the A955 and Dubbieside, close to Bayview football ground.

Two fire appliances helped remove the stricken passengers from the badly damaged vehicle and eyewitnesses reported seeing a wheel from the car rolling along the road as first aid was administered.

The road was closed for around seven hours and police have appealed for witnesses to contact them.

Sergeant Ewan Pearce of the road policing unit said: “This was a serious crash and our thoughts are with the family and friends of the woman who has suffered serious injury as a result, along with those involved.

“Our inquiries into the cause of the crash are continuing and I would ask anyone who saw what happened, and has not yet spoken to officers, to come forward.”

Anyone with information should contact police on 101, quoting incident number 2879 of Sunday May 17.
