Today the Scottish Temperance Act becomes technically operative. Though the appeal to local option cannot be made until towards the end of the present year, already the opposing sides – the Trade on the one hand and the Temperance Associations on the other – have their forces marshalled for the approaching combat. The “heavy boys” were out in force in Dundee yesterday for the regional eliminating contest of the Lorry Driver of the Year competition. More than 50 drivers, their vehicles highly polished, competed for places in the national final in Coventry in September. The competition, based at the Industrial Estate, began with questions on the Highway Code and legal requirement. Then there was a road test over a circular route through the city. The final test was three manoeuvring exercises.

Good Samaritans who helped chase two teenagers after they robbed a 26-year-old woman of a three figure sum of cash are being urged by police to come forward. The woman, who was delivering the takings of a shop to a local bank, was attacked in Dundee’s Murraygate, near Peter Street, shortly after 5.30pm. Although a passer-by came to her aid, the two teenagers were able to make off with a carrier bag containing a “substantial amount of money.” A number of other people in the area also tried to help the woman.
