Hangover at Glebe Park is gone – Wilson

-

Brechin City manager Mark Wilson has called time on the hangover surrounding the Glebe Park outfit.

The former Dundee United and Celtic defender insists the club should be focusing on promotion and not relegation once football returns.

The Angus men secured the high of heading to the Championship under Darren Dods in 2017 – but were relegated within a year without winning a game and fell straight out of League 1 when Barry Smith was in charge.

A fight to keep their senior status via the pyramid playoffs against either Lowland League winners Kelty Hearts or Brora Rangers, who came out on top in the Highlands, under Wilson looked likely until the coronavirus struck with Brechin sitting in the 10th place they had occupied for most of the season.

Wilson is adamant it will be all about looking up in the future.

“There has been a hangover at the club since the Championship season.

“It affected the club in League 1 and last season but now the slate is wiped clean.

“We will look to strengthen the squad with players that are hungry to progress higher than League 2 and we will look to make a strong start once we get going.

“No matter what league we are in and what the structure is we have to be optimistic.

“We will have the same chance as anyone in the new season when it comes to going for promotion.”

Wilson also wanted to address claims his side did not deserve the safety net provided when the season ended early.

He said: “There was a lot said and written about how the season was ended that was incorrect.

“When the season was called, we were in bottom spot but our status was secured.

“We would have preferred to do it under our own steam.

“We may not even have finished bottom as we were seeing progress in our team.

“We played well against Cove in our final game despite losing and we were heading to Elgin with confidence about how things would go in that game and in our remaining ones.”
