Man’s body recovered from golf club at Perth’s Moncreiffe Island

The body of a 48-year-old man was recovered from Moncreiffe Island in Perth yesterday morning following a heavy police presence in the area overnight.

Emergency services rushed to the island on the River Tay around 3.40am following reports of concern for a man at the King James VI Golf Club.

Shortly before 10am, funeral directors flanked by officers brought the body of the man across the railway bridge and down to a waiting private ambulance.

A few minutes earlier a forensics specialist left the scene.

Officers also removed a black bin liner of items from the island which they placed in the back of a police car.

A nearby resident said: “When I was leaving for work I saw two police cars and a van parked on Tay Street just before the railway bridge.

“Police were out guarding the area but there was no sign of an ambulance or search and rescue at that point.”

Witnesses said a large group of youths had been on the island and milling around the Tay Street area during the night but it is unclear if the two incidents are connected.

The onlooker said: “There was loads of kids out last night drinking along Tay Street but I don’t know if it’s linked.”

Another witness said they saw a young male being led down from the railway bridge around 5am as the search was under way.

Police said they were not treating the death as suspicious and a report would be submitted to the procurator fiscal.
