A Fife sub-postmaster and his staff have been described as “absolutely sensational” after going above and beyond to help the community.

Irfan Asghar, his wife Tanzeela and staff at Falkland post office have been hailed as local heroes after reaching out to vulnerable residents during the Covid-19 pandemic.

From delivering groceries to providing free essentials to those with no money for shopping, their efforts to support the community have been described as tireless.

Post Office area manager Susan McMahon said: “I have been filled with pride over what Irfan Asghar and his team have done to support his community.

“He has helped his villagers financially by providing free groceries for those in need and also other support.

“The comments he has had from customers in recognition of this has been outstanding.”

The post office team were presented with a certificate in recognition of their work.

Irfan, 37, praised his staff for their dedication.

“They have been here all the time for me,” he said.

“I couldn’t do everything without them.”

Meanwhile, Tanzeela has been back and forward to the cash and carry to buy items requested by customers.

“Because of her help I never ran out of anything,” said Irfan.

A customer who emailed Post Office bosses to highlight the team’s work said: “I would like to raise the outstanding work being done by Irfan and his team at Falkland post office.

“Even before the Covid-19 outbreak he has worked tirelessly to provide an exceptional level of service, but since the outbreak he and the team have been absolutely sensational in the support of the community here.

“From the very outset he has gone out of his way to assist vulnerable members of the community – with free home deliveries, sourcing specific items outwith the normal stock and also providing discreet financial assistance to those struggling to keep their families fed during these difficult days.

“All this has been provided with a cheerful smile, regardless of how long a day has been put in.”
