The Scottish Education Department’s attention has been directed to the fact that no mention has been made in a circular recently issued as to conferring with Advisory Committees for county districts in connection with the College of Agriculture. The circular refers to the teaching of agricultural subjects at continuation classes. So far as urban areas are concerned, the tradition established by School Boards will furnish a sufficient guide. The difficulty in rural areas is, for many reasons, much greater.

50 years ago

Members of the 12th Aarhus Company of the Frivilligt DrengeForbund (Danish Boys’ Brigade), who are visiting Forfar for two weeks, were given a civic reception in the Town and County Hall last night. They were welcomed by Provost C.M. H.Rodger, who stressed the association between the Danish boys and the 2nd Forfar Company of the Boys’ Brigade. Since 1959 the Danes have visited Forfar three times, while the Forfar company has made four visits to Aarhus in the past 12 years.

Researchers at Dundee University are ready to create “no-go” zones for midgies in the Highlands and Islands of Scotland. They have finally discovered a solution to the annual plague that afflicts millions every year. Trials with a tiny worm-like creature which devours midge larvae are to be carried out on the west coast next week. It would allow midge-free zones to be created by microscopic nematodes – highly specific parasites of insects – without harmful side effects to the environment.
