Spurs stay in hunt as late header beats derby rivals

PREMIER LEAGUE: Alderweireld scores to maintain Mourinho’s home record

- JONATHAN VEAL

Tottenham revived their European hopes by claiming bragging rights with a late 2-1 north London derby win over Arsenal yesterday.

Spurs had to beat the Gunners to keep themselves in the race for Europa League qualification and Toby Alderweireld’s 81st-minute winner did the job.

Arsenal had gone in front through a superb Alexandre Lacazette strike on 16 minutes, but a defensive howler involving Sead Kolasinac and David Luiz allowed Son Heung-min to level within three minutes.

It was heading for a draw until Alderweireld headed home to seal the points which lifted Spurs above Arsenal in the table and ensured Jose Mourinho remained unbeaten against the Gunners at home in the league.

Bournemouth and Aston Villa kept their hopes of avoiding relegation with vital wins yesterday.

West Ham and Watford had both posted victories on Saturday to open up a gap on the bottom three but first Trezeguet scored twice as Villa beat Crystal Palace 2-0 at Villa Park then Bournemouth came back from a goal down at half-time to dent Leicester’s European hopes with a 4-1 win.

Egypt international Trezeguet scored in each half to hand third-from-bottom Villa their first win in 11 league games and move them to within four points of safety with three games left.

Bournemouth are a point better off as Dominic Solanke ended his league goal drought with a timely brace as the Cherries romped to a precious win.

Junior Stanislas’ 66th-minute penalty started the unlikely fightback, cancelling out Jamie Vardy’s first-half opener, with the hosts also benefiting from a Jonny Evans own goal.

A remarkable south-coast contest flipped on his head during a crazy twominute spell in which the Cherries scored twice to go ahead and Leicester defender Caglar Soyuncu was sent off.

Wolves kept their slender Champions League hopes alive with a crucial 3-0 win over limp Everton.

Raul Jimenez’s penalty, his 25th goal of the season, Leander Dendoncker’s header and Diogo Jota’s strike gave them a routine victory against the disappointing Toffees at Molineux.

Nuno Espirito Santo’s side returned to sixth after Sheffield United had briefly overtaken them and they remain in the hunt for the top four with three games left, including a final-day trip to Chelsea.

West Ham’s 4-0 win at Norwich confirmed the Canaries relegation with Michail Antonio netting all the goals.

Champions Liverpool saw their 24-match winning home run in the league brought to an end as Burnley snatched a 1-1 draw at Anfield while Chelsea’s Champions League aspirations were dealt a major blow as they were thumped 3-0 by an inspired Sheffield United at Bramall Lane.

Manchester City sealed second place after Raheem Sterling scored a hat-trick in a 5-0 win at Brighton.

Manchester United can now move into third place tonight with a victory over in-form Southampton at Old Trafford.
