Loan signings won’t be rushed

Boss Davidson keen to give Millwall pair more time on the training pitch

- GORDON BANNERMAN

Callum Davidson won’t be tempted to rush loan stars Isaac “Tanto” Olaofe and Danny McNamara.

But the St Johnstone boss is confident they will both make an impression during a season-long loan from Millwall.

Davidson is keen to fix a new date for today’s scheduled game with St Mirren, which was cancelled when the Buddies were locked down after Covid-19 tests flagged up concerns over backroom staff members.

He had been hoping midfielder Murray Davidson – who was sidelined last term by a broken arm – and left-back Callum Booth would get more game time under their belts in Paisley.

A rearranged match would tick the box in advance of next weekend’s league opener with Dundee United.

Davidson has been impressed with the early impact made by striker Olaofe and Republic of Ireland U21 defender McNamara since arriving in Perth from his former club.

Olaofe, 20, sparkled in a 2-1 midweek win over Aberdeen and the Saints boss reckons there’s plenty more to come.

“Tanto will cause problems. He has pace, he’s strong and wants to score,” said Davidson.

“What I like about him is that he runs in behind defences and causes problems that way.

“It’s maybe a little unfair to judge him now because he hasn’t really trained too much.

“He has scored two in a bounce game but I think it’s important he gets more minutes on the training pitch.”

Davidson revealed he’s keen to add to his squad and could be tempted to look to the English market again.

But he’s prepared to be patient to identify an adaptable asset.

“We’re working on it. I’m always looking,” he said.

“It might be one of those players who can play a couple of positions so we can balance the squad and are covered in all areas.

“Fitness levels are what you’re thinking about at this stage because players will be a bit behind if they’ve not been in somewhere.

“The Championship obviously finished on Wednesday night, so that possibly opens a few things up.

“We’ll have a look at the fallout from that and see if there is anyone we can pick up.”
