Mother tells son’s killers ‘you don’t deserve to have a life’

The mother of a footballer and expectant father, who died after being fatally punched on a night out, has told her son’s killers “you don’t deserve to have a life”.

Matlock Town FC midfielder Jordan Sinnott died in hospital after suffering a fractured skull and brain damage in an assault in the centre of Retford, Nottinghamshire, at about 2am on January 25.

At a sentencing hearing at Nottingham Crown Court yesterday, Cameron Matthews, 22, was jailed for eight years and three months by Judge John Burgess.

Matthews had previously pleaded guilty to manslaughter after admitting throwing the fatal punches.

But it was Kai Denovan, 23, of Collins Walk, Retford – found guilty of manslaughter after a Nottingham Crown Court trial – who instigated the attack and was jailed for 11 years.

A third man, 22-year-old Sean Nicholson, of Beechways, Retford, admitted affray in connection with the same incident and was jailed for 14 months.

Just before the men were sentenced, the victim’s mother Mel Tait paid emotional tribute to her “inspirational” son in a victim impact statement.

Mrs Tait also addressed remarks directly to the men whose actions had taken her 25-year-old son’s life.

She said: “You don’t deserve to have a life. I will never forgive you.”

She said her son had spoken of marrying his partner Kelly Bossons, and excitedly told his mother how he was due to sign for a new football club within days.

She described Jordan as a “talented, caring, bright and inspirational” son.
