100 years ago

An accident occurred at The Cross, Forfar, yesterday afternoon, resulting in James Gordon, an ex-air mechanic of 18 years of age, being badly injured. Gordon was cycling up Castle Street towards his home at The Cross and he had reached the junction of West High Street when he observed a motor car coming towards him. He attempted to avoid a collision by turning in the opposite direction but the car was unable to draw up and Gordon was knocked down and dragged some distance along the ground.

50 years ago

A brother and sister, Mr Thomas Lewis Ontario, Canada, and Mrs Lily Shannon, Scunthorpe, were guests of honour at RAF Leuchars yesterday. Fifty years ago their father, LAC George William Lewis, was chef in the officers’ mess at Leuchars. Mr T Lewis and Mrs Shannon spent their childhood in the married quarters and this was their first return visit. Both had vivid memories of life on the RAF station 50 years ago. Mr Lewis said: “The runways were all grass and a flock of sheep was grazed regularly.”

Lottery buffs in a Mearns village are dubbing their local terminal one of the luckiest in the land after it coughed up thousands of pounds in prizes. Now Jessie and Sandy Davidson, who run the only outlet at St Cyrus, are waiting for the run of luck to land a villager a multi-million-pound jackpot. Between the terminal for the Saturday night draw and the Instants scratchcar­ds, they have paid out nearly £36,000 – and the machine was only installed in March. Mrs Davidson was surprised how the lottery has taken off.

Europe’s nail-biting triumph at the Solheim Cup will leave a lasting legacy for Perth and Kinross, it has been claimed. Suzann Pettersen’s putt on the final hole snatched victory for Europe over the US in a thrilling finale. Councillor­s have said the tournament’s success will bring more top level events to Gleneagles and encourage more people to take up golf. Councillor Tom Gray said: “There is no question that this has benefited Perth and Kinross.”
