Police have launched a hunt for a driver involved in a fatal crash on the A92 in Fife.

Officers said extensive inquiries had revealed a vehicle collided with the car being drivenby Ballingry man John King before it left the road on Saturday night and the driver has not come forward.

Mr King ,63, a Royal Navy veteran who served in the Falklands conflict, died at the scene following the incident around half a mile east of the Cowdenbeath junction at 9.55pm.

A 12-year-old boy and a one-year-old baby also suffered minor injuries and were kept in hospital overnight.

The westbound carriageway was closed for 15 hours while an accident investigation was carried out.

It was initially thought Mr King’s red Vauxhall Meriva was the only vehicle involved in the tragedy.

Police have discovered that was not the case and have appealed for help to trace a black 4x4 and its driver.

Inspector Andy Mather of Fife Road Policing said: “Following extensive inquires into this incident, we have now established that another vehicle collided with the Vauxhall prior to it leaving the road.

“Inquiries are ongoing to confirm the other vehicle involved and identify the driver.”

He added: “We are appealing for anyone who may have been travelling in the Cowdenbeath and Lochgelly area, or on the A92 dual carriageway around 9pm to 10pm that evening, particularly if you saw a black 4x4-type vehicle.

“Anyone who may have dashcam footage from the time is asked to review this and pass on anything which may be of note.

“Any information can be passed to police by calling 101, quoting incident 3941 of September 12, or by contacting Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.”

Tributes have poured in for Mr King, who celebrated his 34th wedding anniversary to wife Ann just days before the crash.

His family said they were devastated by his sudden death, with brother David saying he would never be forgotten.

Others described him as “genuinely one of the good guys”.

News of the search for a second driver came as police investigated another accident on the Fife stretch of the A92.

The four- vehicle crash on the eastbound carriageway near Cowdenbeath at 2pm blocked the road for around an hour and caused congestion for much of the afternoon.
