A noticeable increase in one phase of industrial activity in Cupar is pointed out by Dr C.E. Douglas, medical officer of health, in his report to the Town Council. In place of the single motor garage which existed at the time of his last report under the Factory and Workshops Act six years ago there are now four motor engineering works established in Cupar, with the prospect of another before long. As the centre of a large agricultural district, this would lead as time went on to the use of motor traction to an increasing extent.

Eighty-five Dundee students are expected to start courses with the Open University in January. There have been 160 applications from the city and it is anticipated that this figure will continue to rise as the courses become more widely known. This was reported to Dundee Education Committee last night when it was agreed that a study centre for the Open University be set up at the College of Commerce. The OU is to supply a radio, TV set, tape recorder and an aerial system to enable students to follow the courses.

Tayside’s former golden girl Liz McColgan came roaring back into the international reckoning yesterday with a classy, controlled win in the women’s event at the BUPA Great North Run in Newcastle. It was her first victory for two years and a personal triumph over the injury and illness that have dogged her footsteps for several years. In fact, over the nightmare battle to get back into top competition four specialists told Liz she would never run again. But, never short on grit and self-belief, she “toughed it out”.

Residents who will live beside a sprawling new housing development on the edge of Perth have warned it needs more infrastructure to support the community. Plans for the initial stage of the Almond Valley housing estate have finally been formally submitted following a 20-year planning battle. The 1,300-home proposal was vociferously opposed by the local community council but the Scottish Government said it should be allowed.
