Man hit partner with TV remote

A Kirkcaldy man who battered his partner with a TV remote control has been ordered to carry out 200 hours of unpaid work.

Appearing at Kirkcaldy Sheriff Court, John Stewart, 27, of Chestnut Avenue, admitted assaulting his partner at an address in Maree Place, on February 10 by striking her on the head with a remote control and punching her.

He also admitted causing damage to a car in Chemiss Road, Methilhill, on August 16 and also behaving in a threatening and abusive manner in Methil’s Lilac Bank and Chemiss Road.

The court heard Stewart and his partner had been in a relationship for around four years before the assault.

Mr McDermid said Stewart’s partner was taken to hospital for treatment to swelling to an eye and scratches .

Defence solicitor David Cranston said the pair’s relationship had been souring for some time, and suggested his client’s partner had been prompted to act in the way libelled after a slap to the face.

In reference to the other charge in relation to the vehicle, Mr Cranston noted: “He’s repaired the car but unfortunately the relationship seems to be beyond repair.”

In addition to the 200 hours of unpaid work, Sheriff Jamie Gilchrist’s community payback order included 12 months’ supervision, with a provision Stewart should attend alcohol counselling and treatment.
