Disabled OAP plagued by wasps inside home

- PETER JOHN MEIKLEM

Adisabled Dundee pensioner is “at her wits’ end” after being plagued with wasps crawling out of the fittings inside her sheltered home.

Retired university facilities worker Ma y Fyffe, 74, who has used a wheelchair for the past two years, said the insects have been an issue for the past three weeks.

She said she has killed as many as 14 a day, though getting to them is very difficult because of her reduced mobility.

Mrs Fyffe, who was close to tears due to the wasps’ effect on her quality of life, said: “I have been inundated for the past three weeks.

“There was a nest in the outside wall underneath my w i n d o w. They are coming through the fittings in the ceiling.”

Mrs Fyffe lives in a sheltered, one-room flat run by the Caledonia Housing Association.

She was forced to move from her previous accommodation as she requires access to specialist equipment, such as a hoist, due to her disability.

She received a number of visits from workers trying to exterminate the pests.

“I know they are trying their best, but I can’t live like this any longer.

“T he y have got into the wall cavities and I am sure they are up above me. I can’t always see where they come from. They just a p p e a r. I am in a wheelchair. I can’ t run away from them. I just have to let them buzz about until they land and I spray them.

“Nobody my age should have to put up with this.”

She said she had left a dead wasp in one of the fittings to prove they are getting into her home.

“Two joiners came round and stood in the middle of the living room. T he y wouldn’t even go through the hatch into the ceiling and take a look.

“I t ’s all fine people coming out to see what’s happening , but if they don’t do anything then they’re not helping me.”

Mrs Fyffe has used a wheelchair since becoming seriously ill with sepsis two years ago and spending five months recovering in Victoria Hospital. She also suffers from osteoarthritis.

A spokesperson for Caledonia Housing Association said: “We have been working with various contractors to resolve the wasp problem within one of our properties.

“Pe s t control have

completed a number of visits and are expected to return to monitor the situation and the effectiveness of the solutions put in place.

“We have also instructed a building contractor to visit to check around the windows, doors and look for any other access points.

“We will continue to work with our contractors to make sure we resolve this for our tenant.”
