Saints boss calls on Wotherspoon to hit goal trail

- SEAN HAMILTON

Callum Davidson has challenged David Wotherspoon to be more clinical in front of goal for St Johnstone. Wotherspoon turned in an e ye- catching per formance against Dundee United on Saturday, recording six shots on goal.

His manager was impressed with his latest showing, which followed a run of three goals in two games against Brechin City and Hamilton Accies.

However, Davidson wants to see the 30-year-old hit the net – and produce assists – even more regularly.

“He’s an intelligent football player and he takes on board his role within the team,” said Davidson.

“For me, that’s why, when I was first here ( as Tommy Wright’s assistant), he was one of the first signings that came in. He’s an important part of the team.

“He got into great areas against United. I’d just like him to be that bit more clinical when he gets into the final third.”

St Johnstone racked up 14 efforts on goal to United’s three on Saturday but couldn’t find a way past Tangerines keeper

Benjamin Siegrist. Saints dominating without capitalising felt like a return to the pattern that characterised the early weeks of the season.

However, Davidson, whose side had scored 12 goals in their two previous matches, was keen to focus on the pleasing aspects of his side’s performance.

He said: “We’re undefeated in four. You stay positive and look at that. It’s a clean sheet in a game where, at the start of the season, we might have lost 1-0, so we’ll take the positives.”

Midfielder Murray Davidson admitted he and his team-mates were frustrated by the outcome.

He said: “Right now we’re disappointed because we feel we’ve done enough, we’ve got in enough good areas and had enough chances to win the game.

“When you look at last week ( against Hamilton Accies), every shot we hit goes in and we win 5- 3. This week it’s frustrating but anybody who watched the game can see the positives, they can see what we’re trying to do.

“Dundee United obviously a decent side.” are
