Angus health bosses tackle huge increase in flu jab demand
The number of people eligible for a free flu vaccination in Angus has doubled this year.
Health bosses in the county are working to deal with the “significant challenge” of additional people needing the jab this winter.
Due to the additional risk of coronavirus, more people are being offered an influenza vaccine on the NHS.
This includes social care workers, those living in the same household as people shielding, and those over the age of 55 who were not previously eligible.
A report for Angus Health and Social Care Par t nership said the increased numbers, combined with the constraints of additional PPE and social distancing, present “significant additional challenges”.
It said: “A key priority each year is to ensure that the seasonal flu programme is delivered upon.
“T his will be more important than ever this year, in light of the Covid-19 pandemic.
“This is an area of significant challenge, as those eligible for vaccination is being expanded on from previous years (the vaccination numbers have doubled) along with a consideration of the constraints of PPE and physical distancing.
“It is anticipated that we will see an increased uptake amongst the population who traditionally received the vaccination. Additionally vaccine e l i g i b i l i ty is extended this year in Scotland.”
The report, to be presented to members of the integrated joint board today, said there has been a national drive to carry out jabs as early as possible.
It said: “In these exceptional times effective delivery of the flu immunisation programmes for eligible members of the public and staff is of increased importance, with increased eligibility and anticipated increases in uptake expected.
“Health boards and health and social care partnerships are required to deliver the programme between October 1 and Ma r c h 31 but have been asked by Scottish Government to concentrate the programme before the end of No v e m b e r to maximise the timely immunisation of eligible individuals.
“Given the ongoing Covid- related restrictions and risks, there are significant additional challenges in relation to delivery of this year’s programme, and we very much appreciate the ongoing support of all managers to ensure we prioritise the delivery of all programmes.”
