Saints striker targeting cup glory after being paired with Pars

St Johnstone have silverware in their sights, according to Callum Hendry. The Perth side came from behind to knock Mother well out of the Betfred Cup at the weekend, with Hendry scoring the first of their two goals.

The quarter-final draw then paired them with Championship high-flyers Dunfermline, a tie which will take place at East End Park next month.

With Ross County shocking Celtic and Aberdeen losing to St Mirren, the road to Hampden next February has opened up.

And Hendry made no attempt to hide the fact that Saints want to be there.

“Cup runs are massive,” said the former Blackburn Rovers forward.

“Especially for a club like ours. We are delighted to get through especially after going 1-0 down.

“Anything can happen in a cup. I think we deserve a run in one of them.

“The gaffer said after the game that he wants us in a final. It’s just as important as the league games. So it’s massive for us. We want to win some silverware for the fans again.”

Saints were sharper and better in possession throughout and turned the tie around in 16 minutes after falling behind to Tony Watt’s 61st-minute opener following a set-piece.

He n d r y and David Wotherspoon converted low crosses from the dangerous Michael O’Halloran to send the Perth men into the quarter-finals.

Saints stretched their unbeaten run to 10 matches and look an accomplished team under Callum Davidson, who has been delighted by their Betfred Cup progress.

“It was a tough group we got out of and then another all-Premiership tie after getting Dundee United in the group stages,” Davidson said.

“We seem to be doing it the hard way but, if we carry on winning, I don’t mind.”

Their last eight opponents Dunfermline beat Arbroath at Gayfield to secure their spot in the next round and are top of the Championship, winning four of their five games to hold a one-point lead over title favourites Hearts.
