Wild campers fined over Covid breach

PERTHSHIRE: Police issue fixed penalties to tourists at Loch Tummel

- SEAN O’NEIL

Police cracked down on rogue campers who appeared again in Perthshire at the weekend by issuing them fines.

Several tourists breached coronavirus regulations by travelling to Loch Tummel on Saturday, with at least five campsites set up along the shores.

They were reported to the police who acted swiftly to disperse the campers as well as issuing them with fixed penalty notices.

A spokesperson for Police Scotland said:

“The vast majority of people are complying with the legal restrictions on outdoor gatherings to prevent coronavirus from spreading.

“People should not leave their homes unless for essential purposes.”

Police had already warned they would be stepping up patrols in the Perthshire area to deal with the issue of illicit camping and the local ranger service is expected to be bolstered to help deal with the problem which has also seen beauty spots strewn with litter.

Detectives in Fife have appealed for the public’s help in trying to identity a young man whose body was recovered from the Firth of Forth on Friday.

Police Scotland confirmed officers were called to the shore at Burntisland, near Aberdour Road, around 10.20am on Friday after the body of a man was found in the water.

The death is not being treated as suspicious, but efforts to identify the man have so far proved fruitless.

The man has been described as white, in his late teens to early 20s, between 5ft 7in and 5ft 9in, of very slim build with short blond to light brown hair.

He was wearing grey Lonsdale jogging trousers, a grey hooded Saltrock jumper and blue Adidas high-top trainers.

Detective Sergeant Conrad Musgrave said: “We are carrying out extensive inquiries to find out who this young man is and trace his family. I’d urge anyone who may recognise this description to contact Dunfermline Police Station on 101 quoting reference 0898 of March 19.”
