Heifer takes glory as overwinter­ing champ at young farmers sale

The champion overwinter­ed animal shown at the young farmers sale at Forfar Mart was a 502kg junior heifer from Andrew Adam of Forfar YFC which sold for £1,850.

The judge, William Moir, Cairness, chose a heifer from James Adam, which weighed 548kg and made £1,500, as reserve. The best animal of opposite sex to the champion came from Andrew Beattie of Forfar YFC which weighed 602kg and made £1,600.

Lawrie & Symington, Forfar, had forward a total of 807 store cattle.

In the store sale the champion pen of four bullocks came from DS Stark & Sons, South Ballo, 537kg - £1,410. In second place was W McLaren,

Muirhouses, 464kg £1,300, and third was Witton Farms 455 kg - £1,230.

Pen of four heifers 1 W McLaren 457 kg - £1,270, 2 GD MacDonald & Son, Meadows of Ballied, 512kg - £1,420, 3 Gavin Watson, Muirdrum, 518kg - £1,335.

Bullocks (492) sold to a top of £1,625 for a Simmental from Peasiehill and to 318ppk for a pen of Limousins from Sketewan to average 260ppk.

Heifers (315) sold to £1,680 for a pair of Limousin crosses from Meadows of Ballied and to 359ppk for the same pair to average 258ppk.
