Driver went wrong way on the A90

- JAMES SIMPSON

Afather-of-two feared someone could have been killed after a vehicle was captured on camera driving the wrong way on the A90.

The dramatic incident took place as Ben Russell was travelling between Forfar and Brechin shortly after 9pm on Sunday, as he made his way towards Aberdeen.

Shocking dash-cam footage shows Ben, 35, being forced into the inside lane as the vehicle approached at more than 60mph.

Police Scotland has launched an investigation into the incident and officers are making attempts to trace the driver.

Ben said: “If we had collided with them there would have been a loss of life, given the speed we were driving and the speed they were going.

“They must have been going at least 60mph, because it was so dark, we thought the vehicle was on the right side of the motorway as it around the bend.

“I’ve had to swerve to get out of the way, my worry is on reflection that both of us could have swerved in the same direction to avoid the collision.”

Ben and partner Michelle Newman pulled over and alerted the police.

He added: “When I looked back in the rearview mirror the driver wasn’t slowing down. There was another vehicle on the road as well.

“It all happened so came fast, it looked like it was a silver car but it was hard to tell.

“My kids were in the back, Lana and Steven, and we tried to keep it quiet from them but Lana did get a fright. I was trying to think how this could have happened, was it a foreign driver perhaps who wasn’t familiar with the road and didn’t realise it was a dual carriageway?

“We gave the police the exact location where the incident had happened but I assume it must have been caught on some of the cameras on that stretch of the A90 as well.

“Watching it back on the camera it maybe doesn’t reflect just how quickly it happened but I really had to swerve otherwise there would have been a fatality.”

A Police Scotland spokesman said: “At around 10.10pm on Sunday April 18 2021 we received report of a car driving in the wrong direction on the A90 northbound between Finavon and Brechin.

“Officers attended and searched the area but there was no trace of the car. Inquiries into the incident are ongoing.”
