Forfar must keep on believing, says Irvine

Forfar kept alive their slimmest of hopes of avoiding automatic relegation with a late, late winner to secure their first league win at Station Park this term.

Daniel Scally grabbed his second of the night two minutes into stoppage-time moments after drop rivals Clyde had been reduced to 10 men.

Caretaker Forfar boss Gary Irvine was delighted with his side’s showing, but even more so with the outcome.

“If we keep believing, then it’s still possible (to avoid relegation),” Irvine said. Stranger things have happened.”

It didn’t look a night for miracles early on, however, as the visitors started brightly and took the lead after just 11 minutes with a goal that summed up Forfar’s season.

The usually reliable captain Ross Meechan was caught in possession by Kevin Nicoll, which allowed him to free David Goodwillie, who coolly slotted past Dan Hoban to open the scoring.

It took a rare moment of quality to get the Loons back into the game in the 35 minutes. Scally cut in from the left and bent a beautiful curling effort into the top corner from 20 yards.

A late twist was to come, though. Half-time substitute Marky Munro’s second yellow in the 90th minute seemed to buoy the home side on and Grant Anderson raced down the wing for Forfar and set up Scally to tap in and keep the Loons in League One – for now.

Irvine said: “We have to be professional, we have to believe and we have to push right to the very end.”

Forfar are still six points behind the Bully Wee with just two games remaining.
