Gable Endies’ play-off hopes dashed by Cove

-

Montrose’s hopes of a place in the League One play-offs are on the wane after they lost 2-0 at home to Cove Rangers.

Two flashes of brilliance either side of the break from prolific striker Mitch Megginson proved to be the difference between the sides, but in truth Cove were comfortable winners as Montrose never looked like repeating their victory over Cove at the same venue nine days previously.

The on-form Cove must be approaching the playoff matches to come with their confidence sky-high.

Cove looked lively at the start and on five minutes an Andy Steeves tackle halted Megginson.

On 11 minutes a great ball from Chris Mochrie found Lewis Milne and he was crowded out.

Gable Endies attacker Graham Webster might have done better than put the ball over the bar for the home side.

Back came Cove and Aiden Quinn had to block from Megginson and Leighton Mcintosh.

Montrose had a chance on 37 minutes when Mochrie released Webster and he shot wide on the run.

Cove snatched the lead on the stroke of half-time. Megginson ran at the heart of the home defence and supplied a clinical finish.

Megginson made it two on 51 minutes when he controlled the ball inside the box, stepped past a defender and shot home.

Montrose were almost back in it on 61 minutes when a Russell Mclean header from a Milne corner was cleared off the line by Fraser Fyvie.

Four minutes later, Cove hit on the break and Fleming made a superb double save from Mcintosh and Watson.

Rory Mcallister then shot wide twice in the closing stages.
