• CANOEING: Crieff ’s Fiona Pennie failed to repeat Friday’s team gold at the European Slalom Championsh­ips in Italy when a 50-second penalty for missing a gate cost her a place in the individual K1 kayak final in Ivrea.

Pennie’s quick semifinal time of 97.10 secs would have qualified her safely in the top three, but missing gate eight was fatal and the 2013 champion finished 25th overall.

• CYCLING: Ethan Hayter’s hopes of overall victory at the Volta ao Algarve were dashed on the final climb of the race as his injuries from a crash 24 hours earlier told.

Hayter, the Ineos Grenadiers rider’s elbow heavily bandaged after a costly fall during Saturday’s time trial, could not respond as Joao Rodrigues put in a late attack on the climb to Malhao to pip Hayter by nine seconds in the overall standings.

• Tim Merlier handed Alpecin-fenix victory on the first road stage of their Grand Tour debut as he took the honours on the second day of the Giro d’italia.

The Belgian held off Italian pair Giacomo Nizzolo and Elia Viviani at the end of the 179km stage from Stupinigi to Novara as Filippo Ganna retained the pink jersey for the Ineos Grenadiers.

• TENNIS: Alexander Zverev clinched his second Madrid Open title yesterday after fighting back from a set down to beat Matteo Berrettini 6-7 (6-8) 6-4 6-3.

The fifth seed claimed his third top 10 scalp of the week after wins over fivetime champion Rafael Nadal and Dominic Thiem on his way to the final.

• Aryna Sabalenka won the women’s Madrid Open with a 6-0 3-6 6-4 victory over world number one Ashleigh Barty on Saturday to claim a first clay court title.
