Stars hit for seven as Fife lose to Devils

- KRIS SMITH AND NIGEL DUNCAN

Dundee Stars suffered a heavy 7-1 defeat away to Guildford Flames on Saturday to extend their winless run to seven games.

The short-benched Stars fell behind early on, finding themselves 1-0 behind after 82 seconds with former Dundee man Jordan Cownie assisting in the opener.

Ian Mcnulty added a second for Flames on four minutes before Jesper Alasaari’s shot would be tipped in mid-air by Ian

Watters and the significant change in direction took it out the reach of Stars netminder Adam Morrison.

Mcnulty then added a fourth in the closing seconds of the first period.

Guildford continued to dominate with Jake Bolton and Kyle Locke making it 6-0 in the second period.

New Stars signing Cody Drover made it three goals in two games when he reduced the leeway on 48 minutes.

But Brett Ferguson restored the six-goal advantage when he fired past Morrison.

Next up for the Stars is a home game against Manchester Storm on Saturday before they head across to Belfast to take on the Giants 24 hours later.

Hopeful of making a return for next weekend’s matches are Spencer Dorowicz, Philippe Sanche, Sebastian Bengtsson and the suspended Kyle Haas will be available for selection again against Belfast.

Meanwhile Fife Flyers’

hopes of a home double over Cardiff Devils were dashed last night as they crashed 4-2 in Kirkcaldy.

Flyers went into the game strengthened by a 3-1 victory at the Fife Ice Arena earlier this month, but it took the Welsh combine only 11 minutes to open their account, this time after top scorer Brodie Reid found the net.

And they added a second less than two minutes later through Stephen Nixon to put Fife firmly on the back foot.

Imants Lescovs slotted home to lift Fife fans’ spirits on 18 minutes but Brandon Mcnally made it 3-1 five minutes into the middle session.

The scoreline stayed the same until the 53rd minute

when Lescovs set up James Anderson for a power play strike and that goal set up a grandstand finish.

Home fans hoped for an equaliser and as the clock ticked down Fife withdrew netminder Shane Owen to have six skaters but the gamble failed to pay off.

Mcnally nailed his second of the night after being fed by Sam Duggan.
