Aidan and abetting a Rovers rise to joint top as race hots up

- RAITHROVERS MORTON

2 1

Five teams separated by only two points at the Championship summit.

That is the reason Raith Rovers playmaker Aidan Connolly is refusing to get carried away by the Kirkcaldy club moving joint top with Kilmarnock.

Just one goal separates Raith and the leaders after John Mcglynn’s side came from behind to beat Morton, extending their unbeaten run to 11 in the process.

However, Connolly, the scorer of the equaliser after Michael Ledger had given the visitors an early lead, insists there is no chance that Rovers will become complacent.

“You have to keep your feet on the ground and work hard in every game and keep doing your thing,” said the former Dundee United and Dunfermline forward.

“And at the end of the season we’ll see what happens.

“It was a good result against Morton, it was a big game. The gaffer said before the game we had to get three points if we want to challenge up there.

“It’s a tight league and a lot of teams will fancy themselves, every game is difficult whether you are at the top or the bottom.

“We played Dunfermline a few weeks ago when they were at the bottom and they were probably the better team so no game is easy.

“There are no guaranteed results, you can’t go in and think you’re going to win because it does not work like that. We started slow on Saturday and then they went 1-0 up and that’s what happens.”

Connolly brought Raith level in the first half after Morton capitalised on a bright start to take the lead through Michael Ledger after only five minutes.

Ethan Ross, who set up Connolly for his goal, got involved in the action himself in the 67 th with a sublime finish that left ’Ton goalkeeper Jack Hamilton with no chance.

Former Aberdeen starlet Ross, who only joined last month, has now scored four goals in as many games and Connolly hopes that run continues

He added: “Ethan has been brilliant and he is a good lad as well.

“He’s been a great signing and long may it continue. He’s a young player and I’m sure in the future he will be looking to make a big move but just now he is delivering and that’s all you can do.

“In the first few games when he came it was hard because he was getting his match sharpness back but now he looks sharp and his finish on Saturday was quality, he’s got real quality and he is quick as well so teams will be scared.”

Rovers last tasted defeat away to Celtic in the League Cup on September 23. Asked to explain what underpinned their recent purple patch, Connolly replied: “It’s just hard work, that’s it.”
