How to make the most of Scotland’s transition to net zero

- By Dr Martin Valenti, Energy Transition and Greenenterprise Director

BUSINESSES in Scotland, especially SMES, have been hit by a series of seismic shockwaves in recent years, firstly by Brexit, and then by the COVID pandemic.

It would be easy to see net-zero as a barrier

and yet another huge hurdle to overcome, but I truly believe it is the greatest economic opportunity of our time.

While it might seem counterintuitive to talk about climate change and opportunity in the same sentence, having the eyes of the world upon us, as we hosted COP26 in Glasgow, was a lightbulb moment. It is also one which sets the stage for progressive action as we look to build a carbon neutral economy.

So where do businesses start? Firstly, you as a business owner should take stock of where you are right now.

Secondly, think about what level of support you need and who is best placed to provide that. Finally, decide how to take that first step in your journey to net zero.

Get involved with organisations like Business Gateway, Scottish Enterprise, Highlands and Islands Enterprise, South

of Scotland Enterprise, the Scottish Council for Development and Industry, the Federation

of Small Businesses and Business in the Community Scotland.

They know what the challenges and opportunities are for businesses to achieve net zero and they are ready to support you. Reach out now and you will play a crucial role in helping Scotland become a world leader in the global net zero economy.

Ultimately, hope mobilises, while fear paralyses. It is time to focus on a new narrative, one about hope, not fear, collaboration, not combat, and business opportunities, not business barriers. It is time to stand up, walk tall and make us all proud of our record on

sustainability.
