Glasgow happy to pay Price of fame

- ANTHONY BROWN

Ali Price aims to continue establishing himself as one of the best scrum-halves in world rugby after extending his contract with Glasgow.

The 28-year-old Scotland international made his 100th appearance for the Scotstoun club last weekend and has now re-signed for the 2022-23 campaign.

Price, who played for the British and Irish Lions in the summer, believes he still has further scope to take his game to new heights.

After agreeing his new deal, he told Glasgow’s website: “I’m over the moon to re-sign. My whole career has been with this club, since coming here as a 20-year-old.

“Everything I’ve managed to achieve in my career to date I owe to the coaches and team-mates I’ve had in the Glasgow environment, and I’m excited to keep going.

“It’s been an incredibly exciting time for me, and this week has been a bit crazy with the way it’s all panned out – captaining the team on my 100th appearance and then this, there haven’t been many weeks like it.

“I feel like I’ve matured as a person as well as a rugby player while here.

“I just want to keep getting better. I’ve still got a fair few years left in me and I want to be one of the best in the world in my position. I’m excited to keep improving and show what I can offer to this club.”

Head coach Danny Wilson is delighted to secure Price’s services for another season.

He said: “It’s great news that Ali has committed his future to Glasgow Warriors.

“He’s a world-class scrum-half who’s hugely passionate about playing for this club.”

Meanwhile, long-serving lock Ben Toolis will leave Edinburgh at the end of the season to join a Japanese club.

The 29-year-old Scotland international, who joined in 2013, is out injured and will move on at the end of

his ninth and final season in the Scottish capital.

Toolis is keen for a fresh challenge and also wants to be closer to his native Australia.

He told the Edinburgh website: “I’m moving on at the end of the season because I partly want to experience something new, but also move closer to home.

“When a new opportunity arose in Japan, I was so excited at the prospect of that experience, but the idea of leaving Edinburgh after nine years was also daunting.

“However, I decided that it’s the perfect time in my rugby career to experience

something new and challenge myself in a different culture and environment.”

Toolis, who has made 127 appearances for Edinburgh and won 26 international caps, declared his time in Scotland a success.

He said: “When I joined the club in 2013, I was so nervous to uproot my life and move across the world but I was also extremely hopeful that a career in professional rugby would be all that I imagined.

“I’m pleased to say that my time at Edinburgh has completely surpassed all my expectations.”

Toolis is recovering from a knee injury and has not

featured for Edinburgh since June. However, he is hoping to return to action early in 2022 before his move to Japan.

He said: “The past year has been extremely tough both mentally and physically due to injury. There have been a few hiccups and delays along the way but I hope to be back very soon.

“I want to finish my time at Edinburgh Rugby on a high and contribute in any way I can to help continue the momentum the club has built so far this season. I hope to pull the Edinburgh jersey on as much as I can and play for my teammates and fans.”
