CRICKET
Charlie Peet says Scotland will take their inspiration from the senior side when they launch their U19 World Cup campaign against Sri Lanka tomorrow.
The young Scots, handed a surprise place in the tournament following the withdrawal of New Zealand, are in a daunting group which also includes Australia and hosts West Indies.
But skipper Peet claims his team will be bidding to emulate the achievements of Kyle Coetzer’s side who qualified from the group stage of a global event for the first time at last year’s T20 World Cup.
Spinner Peet said: “The senior team are a huge inspiration for what they did at the T20 World Cup. “Quite a few of our guys play with and rub shoulders with the first team quite a lot, so to see them put in those sorts of performances against the best teams in the world gives us belief that we can do the same.”
The Scots were initially left heartbroken when they lost the final of the qualifying competition to Ireland but New Zealand’s withdrawal due to quarantine issues handed them an eleventh-hour reprieve.
The young Scots won their first warm-up match against Uganda on Monday but last night suffered a heavy seven-wicket defeat against
Ireland in their final warm-up match. Batting first, they stuttered to 138 all out, Tom Mackintosh top-scoring with 26. The Irish then cruised to their target with almost 18 overs to spare despite Ollie Davidson’s 3-27.
