Knitting The Herring Exhibition

Knitting The Herring explores the history, uses, creativity and traditions held within fishermen’s ganseys and showcases key examples from the Scottish Fisheries Museum’s nationally recognised collection. Starting out in the industry as young men, most Scottish fishermen between the late 19th and early 20th Century would have owned at least one gansey (a tightly knitted sweater that was usually dark blue but sometimes grey, cream or even red), created for them by a family member.
