TENNIS

Arbroath tennis ace Jonny O’mara played two more matches ahead of next week’s Australian Open before exiting the Sydney Classic yesterday.

The 26-year-old and his French partner Fabrice Martin scored a surprise 6-4, 1-6, 10-6 victory over fourth seeds Tim Puetz (Germany) and Mike Venus (New Zealand) and returned later to face Fabio Fognini and Simone Bolelli in the quarter-finals.

Fognini and Bolelli had stunned Jamie Murray and Bruno Soares in the previous round, and the Italians maintained that form as they downed O’mara and Martin 7-5, 7-5.
