Judges should not be interfering with women’s rights over their bodies

-

Sir, – Ex-president Trump’s reign casts a long shadow over America, but also Europe.

Europe is suffering for his dalliances with President Putin, but American women are just about to be kicked in the crotch – literally.

He threw a “ticking time bomb” into the American Constitution by stacking the Supreme Court with strongly Conservative judges with a 5/4 majority.

Not just mildly Conservative, but as hardnosed as they come. They have been described by insiders as rabid antiabortionist and that is Amy Coney Barret, the last judge appointed during the presidential elections, within weeks of his overthrow.

So for 50 years women have had the right to have an abortion for certain defined reasons, but in

July this will probably be overruled.

Abortions were taking place prior to the Roe vs Wade Supreme Court ruling, but these often were “back street” with the risks to the woman.

In a market-driven society, where there is a need it will return, it’s called “market forces”.

The recent Covid pandemic has enlightened us all to the fact that there are many harms brought about this infection – the risk of death and long Covid.

Additional harms on forced shielding for those “at risk”. The harm of lockdowns on the mental state of the nation. The loss of revenue of businesses and long-term employment. There are others.

Likewise, American women’s right to take action regarding their own bodies due to their own personal circumstances was enabled by the Roe Vs Wade ruling in 1974.

It appears that five Supreme Court judges wish to force women back into an abortion lockdown they faced pre-1974.

The pregnancy can adversely affect the mother and baby, The baby may have birth defects.

The new baby may add financial stresses to the family, affecting all of the existing members.

Roe Vs Wade allowed the mother to make an informed choice on abortion based on her and her family circumstances and risks.

It’s her body, not mine or yours or five Supreme Court judges.

Trust Trump to screw things up.
