CYCLING

Arnaud Demare doubled up as he edged out Caleb Ewan and Mark Cavendish to take victory on stage six of the Giro d’italia in Scalea.

The Frenchman had taken his first Grand Tour stage victory in two years on Wednesday and had to wait barely 24 hours more for a second as he followed up the win in Messina by beating Ewan in a photo finish as Cavendish faded to third, hitting his handlebars in frustration as they crossed the line.

The sprint finish meant there were no major changes at the top of the general classification, in which Juan Pedro Lopez holds the leader’s pink jersey.

Britain’s Simon Yates is the best placed of the main favourites in fourth, one minute and 42 seconds down ahead of three tough days to come which should shake up the standings.

SQUASH

Montrose squash player Lisa Aitken will face an ultra-familiar opponent when she meets Donna Lobban in the first round of the World Championships in Cairo later today.

The Australian became an adopted Scot after marrying Scottish number one Greg Lobban, with whom Aitken won a bronze medal at last month’s World Doubles Championships in Glasgow. The two left-handers are closely matched on paper with Aitken equalling her career-high ranking of 32 earlier this month, while Lobban slipped seven places to number 37. The 35-year-old was ranked as high as 13 in 2011.

TENNIS

Defending champion Iga Swiatek recovered from a poor start to defeat Victoria Azarenka and reach the quarter-finals of the Italian Open in Rome. The world number one, who is bidding for a fifth consecutive title, began the match with a slew of errors and trailed 3-0 but battled back to claim a 6-4 6-1 victory.

In the men’s event, second seed Alexander Zverev defeated Alex De Minaur 6-3 7-6 (7-5) while Stefanos Tsitsipas fought back from a set down to see off Karen Khachanov 4-6 6-0 6-3.
