Soul-destroying Cupar vandalism
Sir, – I’m writing to you on the subject of the destruction and devastation on Moathill, Cupar.
Who did this? Why did they do it? What did they want or gain?
We may never know the answers to these questions but the destruction of small trees and saplings caused distress to both those involved in planting and looking after them and to the many passers-by, young to old, who enjoyed the presence of the trees.
With all the negative messaging about climate change and the destruction of habitats it is easy to feel powerless. However, there are groups of local people who are trying hard to make positive change for everyone to enjoy. The leaders spend many hours either looking and applying for
funding or else organising and communicating with volunteers. On the Sustainable Cupar website locals can find the most recent actions of the FAB Group (Fruit and Blossom) as there are maps and photos of tree planting, watering, cowslip planting as well as historical information on the Community Orchard
– a lovely place to sit and contemplate, surrounded by birdsong and blossom.
Using the venue of the farmers’ market for engagement the FAB group has sought views from the local community and hopes to improve more areas of the town. It is devastating when all this hard work can be destroyed overnight. It would be good if anyone has ideas about how the recent plantings can be protected or monitored in the future. It would appear that those who did the damage have too much time and energy
– the FAB group would be very willing to help them to channel this in a positive way – through planting, watering, balsam bashing and eventually helping with new projects.
K Murdoch.
Holly Park,
Cupar.
