Mountain camp will see Muir push on

-

Dundee Hawkhill Harrier Laura Muir can make a speedy return from injury at today’s Diamond League leg in Birmingham, her training partner Jemma Reekie believes.

The Olympic 1,500m silver medallist, who turned 29 last week, races for the first time since sustaining a back injury in late winter at a meeting which will provide an advance peek at the revamped Alexander Stadium – host of this summer’s Commonwealth Games.

The top-class field will offer a strong early examination for Muir whose only outing of 2022 was a low-key appearance over 600m in South Africa.

But Reekie, who had to recover from a case of glandular fever, senses there will be no holding the Milnathort athlete back following a month in the Swiss mountains.

“We got a good camp in Potchestroom and then we were actually both home when these injuries had happened,” she said.

“I went out to South Africa with our coach Andy Young and one of the boys and reset while Laura was doing her rehab and everything.

“But we were still in contact with each other and now we’re out here training together, pushing each other. So we’re all good.”

Jenny Selman will look to build on her World Indoor Championship call-up in the 800m but fellow Fifer Nicole Yeargin, due to compete over 400m, has opted to return to her base in the US.

Tokyo men’s 1,500m bronze medallist Josh Kerr will make only his second appearance on the Diamond League circuit to sharpen up for his world title bid in July.

The Seattle-based Scot, 24, has already added the European mile and British 1,500m record indoors to his collection in 2022.

World 200m champion Dina asherSmith will run in the 100m.
