ATHLETES CLAIM 58 MEDALS AT NATIONALS

Athletes from Perth Strathtay Harriers and many Perth and Kinross schools competed at the Scottish Disability Sport National Junior Athletics Championsh­ips in Grangemout­h.

Strathtay president Jim Hunter BEM said: “It’s fantastic to see what partnershi­p working can achieve across our community with club, schools and our wonderful local umbrella organisati­on, Perth and Kinross Disability Sport, all working to help make memories for these special young people.

“The Perth athletes won 58 medals as they took part in a variety of run, jump and throw events.

“The weather was awful at times but this did not stop many personal best performanc­es being achieved.

“There were multiple golds for Mairi Gatherer and Mathew Doig, who were just two of the notable performers.

“David Noble had fine wins and posted personal bests In his throws events.

“It was fantastic to see some of our younger athletes competing and winning much deserved medals with Sophie McFee being on the podium in her first national championsh­ips.

“Frame runners posted great times and won many medals and T37 athlete Freya Howgate, competing in her last Junior National event, bowed out in style with three golds to add to her trophy cabinet.”

● Dundee Hawkhill Harrier Warren Lorente has been in scintillat­ing form.

The 17-year-old won a silver medal at the Scottish Schools Athletics Championsh­ips in Grangemout­h.

Running in the 2,000m steeplecha­se, he set a club record of 6:16.81, smashing the previous mark of 6:41.69.

It was only his third steeplecha­se run and his time takes him to eighth in the UK at U20 level in this event.

At the Angus Schools Championsh­ips, he won the 800 and 1,500m, breaking the 1,500m record which had stood since 1974.
