Forfarshire’ s victory inspired by Wallace

- WILLIAM DICK

Scott Cameron claims the best has yet to come from his Forfarshire side – despite a comprehensive Eastern Premier cricket win over Stoneywood-dyce at Forthill at the weekend.

Another brilliant innings from Craig Wallace set Shire on the way to their target after Jack Hogarth’s 4-44 and Lewis James’ 3-23 had helped dismiss the visitors for 201.

It was the Forthill side’s third straight league win and skipper Cameron said: “We are doing well just now but we still aren’t playing our best cricket consistently.

“We are winning games, though, and that’s what matters.”

Despite the early loss of opening partner Rory Johnston, Wallace took the attack to the visiting bowlers, with a series of sizzling shots taking him to a rapid 70 before being stumped going for another huge hit.

He had excellent support from overseas amateur Jack O’neill, the Australian all-rounder hitting a fine 69no, while Scotland star Michael Leask weighed-in with a hard-hitting 49no as Shire won in just 27 overs.

Cameron added: “Craig just keeps getting runs consistently at the top of the order which is great for us.

“Jack is a quality batter and is showing it with his runs. He started down the order but that was just because it’s hard to judge how an overseas player is going to adapt to Scottish conditions but he is playing like this is his home.”

Elsewhere, there were mixed emotions for Falkland after a dramatic last-ball tie against Carlton at Grange Loan.

Chasing the home side’s 222-7, the Fifers appeared to have things under control at 211-4 only for Euan Sloan to be needlessly run out for 36. When Cameron Nellies was bowled by Neville Madziva off the next delivery, it was left to Harsha Cooray and Devon May.

The visitors still needed nine runs from the final over and then two from the last ball but May was only able to scramble a single, leaving Cooray unbeaten on an excellent 73-ball 75.

Earlier, Jack Henderson and skipper Lyle Robertson both claimed three wickets as Falkland produced a fine display to restrict the total, despite half-centuries from Shujaa Khan and Fraser Burnett.

There was more disappointment for Arbroath who went down by 90 runs to champions Heriot’s at Goldenacre.

Despite half-centuries from Fraser Proud and Matthew Cross, the visitors were firmly in the hunt after reducing Heriot’s to 198-6, Wihan Lubbe taking 3-23. Runs from the lower order, particularly a 15-ball 37 from Joe Kinghorn-gray, propelled the home side to 290-9.

Lubbe led the reply with 87 including eight boundaries and two maximums but Arbroath were unable to compile the substantial partnerships required.
