Super-sub role’ s fine for Todorov

- DUNFERMLINE QUEENOFTHESOUTH

N1 1 ikolay Todorov played the role of super-sub for Dunfermline at East End Park on Saturday – and that suits the Bulgarian striker just fine.

The 26-year-old, who was on loan at Queen of the South in 2018 and also scored against them in September’s 2-0 win at Palmerston Park, came off the bench to equalise for the Pars midway through the second half.

The visitors’ attacking approach had caused Dunfermline plenty of problems and threatened to end their unbeaten home record when Ruari Paton put Queens ahead on the stroke of half-time.

Todorov’s close-range

header gave him his seventh goal this term, making him Dunfermline’s top scorer, and he was inches away from claiming all three points with a low raking shot in the 92nd minute.

Having made such a positive impact as a substitute, many players would be demanding a starting place but mildmannered Todorov has no plans to smash down manager James Mcpake’s door.

“I love to help the team in any way I can, so I was delighted to score an equaliser for them,” he said.

“As long as the team keeps winning, then there’s no problem with me being on the bench.

“It’s a long season, and we’re at the top of the league for a reason.

“A cross came in from the

right side (from Aaron Comrie) and I was stronger than their defender and managed to get the header on target.

“I had that chance to win it at the end, and from where I was, I’m gutted that the shot didn’t go in.”

“The boys did well to dig in and come back to get a point.”

With FC Edinburgh winning 2-0 at Clyde, Dunfermline’s draw trimmed their lead at the top of League One to a still healthy five points.

Forward Craig Wighton admitted: “It was a good point in the end after being behind at half-time.

“On another day we could have won, but we might also have lost, so we’ll take a point.”

With four wins in their previous six league games, the in-form Dumfries outfit

more than matched the Fifers in every department to suggest they are capable of challenging for promotion after being relegated from the Championship last season.

Wighton added: “Other teams have just come here and sat in against us, but Queen of the South came here and went toe-to-toe with us.

“It was a hard-fought game and both teams had plenty of chances.

“It was end to end and it felt like a really open game.”

The Pars now have a twoweek break from league duty before visiting Airdrie eight days before Christmas.

They will be back in action this Friday when they travel to Championship side Arbroath in the Challenge Cup quarter-finals.
